About Asker

Asker is known for its beautiful and varied nature, the Royal family in Skaugum, important businesses  and for being one of the most popular places in Norway to live.

Asker is one of the suburbs of Oslo, located next to Bærum on the west side of the Norwegian capital. Neighbours on the other side are Lier and Drammen in Buskerud and Slemmestad in Røyken.

Asker has an area of around 100 square kilometres and a population of aproxomately 55,000 inhabitants. The village of Asker (the picture above) is the administrative centre in Asker muncipality.

Notable residents
According to SSB (Statistics Norway), the muncipalities of Asker and Bærum ranks as the wealthiest municipalities in Norway based on median household income.

The Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon Magnus and Crown Princess Mette-Marit live in Skaugum in Asker with their children, Princesse Ingrid Alexandra, Prince Sverre Magnus and Marius Borg Høiby. The picture above is from the National Day celebration in Skaugum with the Royal family.

Nature and business

In Asker you can enjoy the Oslo fjord with thrilling islands and small island communities, wide, fertile valleys, arable land, hilly terrain, challenging rock faces and deep forests with many lakes for both fishing and taking a bath.The biggest lake is Semsvann (the picture below), and the area around the lake is popular for outdoor activities all year around.

The first IKEA store outside of Sweden opened in Billingstad in Asker in 1963, and since that Billingstad and Slependen has developed into an important shopping area. There are shopping malls in Holmen and Asker centre, and a many small local shops in Vollen.

Asker is a popular business district known for many important businesses, espacially for companies in the technology and offshore sector.
